RailPros Inc., furthering its commitment to engineering education and opportunities, participated in the Western District of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Student Leadership Summit, held at California State University, Fullerton.
Vice President Karen Hankinson, PE and Juan Navarro, PE represented RailPros in a three day series of meet-and-greats, speed interviews, and presentations. Given by Karen, who is a renowned industry expert, the RailPros presentation was entitled, “Traffic Signal Preemption at Grade Crossings.” This presentation showcased techniques for enhancing safety at railroad grade crossings. The student attendees learned the basics of interconnected traffic signals with railroad signal systems, including common terminology, current industry standards, and common practices. The course detailed what a presignal and a queue cutter signal are and how they can be used as effective queue prevention devices at grade crossings. The presentation included examples of projects in the area from the design phase through construction.
The annual summit is attended by undergraduate and graduate students interested in a career in transportation. Engineering and transportation firms and agencies are encouraged to present and meet future engineering leaders for job opportunities and training. As a sponsor of ITE, RailPros continues to encourage the future of the transportation and engineering industries.
